Myths about fostering in Nottingham

Posted on

Upon speaking to our foster carers, there are many conversations that crop up surrounding myths when it comes to fostering in Nottingham. Time and time again, many people have an impression of what fostering is and whether they can even foster in the first place.

In this article, we’re going to de-bunk and discuss some common myths surrounding fostering.

You have to be a certain age when fostering in Nottingham

Many people assume that you have to be young to foster. We take the view that if you think you can do it, you probably can. Of course, there are certain eligibility factors you have to tick off your list, but age isn’t one of them if you’re over the age of 21. If you have a spare room and are interested in making a real change to Nottingham children’s lives, then there is no reason as to why you cannot foster. Age is relative if you’ve got a big heart and you’re willing to give it your all.

The size of your house does not matter

It’s a common assumption that you need to have a big house with a few extra bedrooms in order to become a foster carer. This isn’t the case. When fostering in Nottingham, all you need is one spare bedroom in order for your foster children or young adult to have the independence and room they need. If you’re fostering a baby, then they will most likely share a room with you for a couple of years. If your foster children are being placed into your care with their siblings, they can share a room but not with other children in the household.

You can’t be single if you want to foster

Single? Divorced? Widowed? A part of the LGBT community? It doesn’t matter! When you foster, it’s all about who you are as a person. The personal traits you have to make an impact on the lives of your foster children is all that we care about at Fostering Dimensions.

There needs to be other children in the household

This isn’t the case. Many people have different backgrounds and this can be anything from choosing not to have your own kids or having your own and they have grown up and left the nest. Whatever the circumstance is, it doesn’t make a difference when it comes to Fostering in Nottingham.

Only women can foster

This sounds crazy but it’s surprising how many people assume that males alone cannot foster. When fostering in Nottingham, it doesn’t matter if you’re male, female or gender-neutral. Both women and men can make great foster parents as each individual brings their own skills and life experiences to fostering.
